Andaman Sea Sailing in Phuket Thailand

Andaman Sea Sailing in Phuket Thailand - An Overview

Andaman Sea Sailing in Phuket Thailand - Year round, The Andaman Sea and around Phuket is one of the most beautiful sailing areas in the world.

Unless you are fortunate enough to be able to bring your own vessel, the best and easiest way to explore the beautiful and mystical Andaman Sea is to fly into Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, where you will find just about every type of craft is available for charter, whether it be bare board or crewed, there will undoubtedly something to suit all your requirements, from racing in one of our regattas to taking friends and family for a holiday cruise and doing some island hopping.

There are 3 major boating centres on the Island, To the north east we have The Yacht Haven, to the east you will find The Boat Lagoon and The Royal Phuket Marina and in the south east the public and popular Chalong Bay anchorage. All 3 points of embarkation are within easy striking distance of Phang Nga Bay, which to my mind should be considered as one of the wonders of the world and lists among its many treasures, the ever popular "James Bond Island". A 3–7 day trip into this enchanting area will live in the memory forever.

For those who have never ventured to the Andaman Sea before, it is located to the southeast of The Bay of Bengal, the fish nursery for the Indian Ocean, on the west coast of Thailand north into Burma (Myanmar).

There are a huge number of sheltered anchorages on the myriad of islands in the Phuket vicinity and apart from the speed-boat tours to the famous James Bond and Phi Phi Islands, you will normally have the beach or bay to yourself.

For the bare boat sailor, the whole area around Phuket is well charted, with only moderately bad weather and currents in the low season (April-Oct). Thus, making it a mid-winter tropical heaven in the West’s mid winter, with water temperatures of around 28C, varying little the year round.

The unbelievable Andaman Sea has got to be utopia for anyone who likes cruising or those who like to be pampered by an experienced crew, with Champaign and all the trimmings, including private scuba diving off the many highly populated reefs.

When cruising south west of Chalong Bay, it is always worth trailing a fishing line, Tuna abound and with a bigger lure, Black Marlin, King Mackerel, Wahoo or Sail Fish, along with many other big game fish could easily be on your menu, for a moonlit meal at sea.

North of Phuket we have the Similan (Emerald) Islands, one of the world’s greatest game fishing areas only surpassed by the Burma Banks and the Mergui Archipelago, which is only visited by the local fishermen and Sea Gypsies, a great bunch of lads living off the briny.

This is a totally pristine cruise destination for the more ambitious and serious explorers, although approval to enter this 10,000 square miles of islands can be fraught with problems.

Another popular voyage out of Thailand, which does not entail the governmental problems of Myanmar (Burma), is southbound to the Malaysian islands of Langkawi (duty free) and Penang.

The Andaman Sea is never boring as there are always new places to go and sights to be seen, in a lifetime one could only scratch the surface of this diverse sea with its coral reefs, mangrove forests, rain forests, sea caves, beaches, coves and limestone islands that resemble mushrooms rising from the water.

Whales, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, sea eagles, frigate birds and fish varieties too numerous to mention can all be spotted on a regular basis. You would also be hard pressed to see better sunsets in any location, here they are astounding and due to our latitude the sun always sets between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm.

If you are in the market for a boat specifically designed for cruising the Andaman Sea, we seriously recommend the new Andaman Cabriolet Catamaran, please click on the link to view info and technical specifications on this superb value for money catamaran, built here in Phuket, designed to be managed by a crew of 2, 4 or 6.

Well worth a look as it is a great concept for year round racing or cruising.
