Just off the island of Phuket, over Sarasin Bridge, is the beautiful, 15 mile long, Natai Beach which, since the start of development, has been dubbed "Greater Phuket".
This is virgin territory with little in the way of infrastructure although it now offers one of the few opportunities for beach–front living in the Phuket area.
Natai Beach has also been dubbed Thailands "Hamptons" due to the amount of large, gated, waterfront villas, luxury resorts, which includes Raffles, and the newly rebuilt Thai Muang golf course about 15 minutes to the north.
International architecture has come into its own here as the big players compete in making their developments stand out and it's nice to get away from the obligatory "shop houses" that make Phuket island so architecturally boring in so many places.
Prices are similar to Phuket Island but, boy, do you get a lot more for your money and as building continues to progress and the infrastructure, such as shopping and local bars, spring up, as they undoubtedly will, prices will inevitably continue to rise.
Unlike the island of Phuket there is plenty of land available although the ultra exclusive nature of the area means that "down market" developments would be frowned upon.
There is a new pier, close to the Natai Project, which is ideally located for island hopping to the Similan Islands and possibly the best fishing and diving in the world, however, the build quality of this structure leaves a bit to be desired as the rebar used in it's construction has been left exposed whis not going to leave it as a lasting monument to the builder.
Within an hours drive, all the facilities of Phuket are available including our vast shopping malls and our world famous golf courses, so I would say transport is essential.
Natai Beach is an idyllic family location and being only 20 minutes from the airport, travellers from Malaysia, Singapore or Hong Kong can get the daily morning flight and be sitting enjoying the pristine beach views over brunch.
This makes it the ideal getaway for the international business executive and the ultimate in homes for their families. Two of the larger developments in this very up market and serene area are "The Natai" and "The Sava"
These developments, all designed by Paul Raff, comprise of contemporary, open plan apartments and villas with swimming pools and focusing on flexibility and open space with design features such as floor to ceiling sliding glass windows, inviting the constant ocean breeze and thus integrating an indoor and outdoor theme of tropical living.
